"EV" covers three kinds of vehicle. Here is how each one works, in plain language.
HEV
Hybrid electric vehicle · Hybrid
A petrol engine works with an electric motor and a small battery. The battery charges itself as you drive and brake, so you never plug in.
- Good to know
- Uses less fuel than a petrol-only car, especially around town. Refuel as normal.
- Charging
- Never needs charging.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle · Plug-in hybrid
A larger battery you charge from a power point or charger, plus a petrol engine. Many everyday trips can be driven on electricity alone.

- Electric driving for daily trips, with the petrol engine ready for longer journeys.
- Charging
- Plug in at home or at a charger. It still drives as a hybrid when the battery is used.

Runs on electricity only, from a battery you charge at home, at work or at a public charger. No petrol engine and no fuel stops.

- The lowest energy cost for most drivers who can charge at home, and a quiet, smooth drive.
